Today’s Passage

This morning I will be preaching from 1 Corinthians 3:18-23.

18 No one should deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks he is wise in this age, he must become foolish so that he can become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, since it is written:  He catches the wise in their craftiness— 20 and again, The Lord knows the reasonings of the wise, that they are futile. 21 So no one should boast in men, for all things are yours: 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come—all are yours, 23 and you belong to Christ, and Christ to God (HCSB).

  1. I think that Paul primarily addresses the issues of foolishness, that being the foolishness of worldly wisdom and God’s foolishness in the cross, and the issue of church division. Preaching through 1 Corinthians has been most rewarding, especially from the pastoral perspective.

  2. Yeah, I enjoy reading 1 Corinthians so much. Do you have Carson’s “The Cross and Christian Ministry”? It’s a treatment of the first four chapters from a leadership standpoint. Some good insights.

  3. TC: I don’t have Carson’s book, though I am sure he has plenty of insights. I wish I had more of Carson’s works, as what I have read has been excellent.
